Nova Scotia Beavers

children aged 5 to 8 years
Wednesday 16:45 to 17:45

Beaver FarmWe have fun both outside and in while learning new and old skills along the way. The colony often works as a unit but also learns to have fun as individuals. Our outdoor program includes learning campfire skills, songs, and playing team games with friends.

The Beaver Colony is where our youngest children meet, aged 5 to 8 years, and our motto is “Busy and Bright”.

What are Beaver Scouts and Scouting?

Beaver Farm VisitScouts started in 1907, with an age range of 8 to 15 years. Beavers were first formed in Canada in 1973 and later came to the UK to fill the gap for younger brothers and sisters. Whilst in the Colony, the Beavers learn the ‘Friends of the Forest’ story, which is about a Beaver growing up and moving onto be a wolf cub. The Leaders of the Beaver Colony have names taken from the ‘Friends of the Forest’ book. “Ahmeek” is always the Colony Leader.

As Beavers, we learn about our local community, county and country and the wider world. We will do this by visiting local public services and places of interest. Our Beaver “Colony” subdivides into “Lodges” to form smaller teams.

These activities form part of our four “Paw Print” badges, Our Beaver “Colony” forms smaller teams by dividing into “Lodges”.“Project Award”, “Hobby” and “Friendship” badges (just to name a few).

Together, the Colony regularly does nature walks and explores the local surroundings. Through these activities, we get an appreciation and respect for the world around ourselves.

What is expected of a Beaver Scout?

A Beaver is expected to be:

  • On time
  • Clean and smart (“paws and claws”)
  • Polite and nice
  • Willing to help and join in

What is the Beaver Scouts journey (programme)?

When a Beaver has completed their Kitten badge, they can start earning their footprint badges. There are four footprint badges, each one covering learning, developing, exploring and discovering. Each footprint takes between four to six months to complete. You can find out more about our programme on our Beaver Programme page.

The beavers have been very busy making a new board we can track birthdays on (as we are good at forgetting!). Each month of the year is on a different British native leaf and we all make a cut-out of ourselves to go around too!

Beavers: Fruit & Veg

Last term, our beavers planted a mix of fruit and veg plants. The ‘fruits’ of their labour are now paying off with some wonderful tomatoes, gorgeous strawberries and some very shy carrots. For a year where the garden hasn’t done particularly well with the weird weather patterns, I think our beavers have excelled!

Beavers: Mother’s Day

We couldn’t post this on the night as our Beavers were undertaking a secret mission to make Mother’s Day cards. But now the day has past, here is a behind the scenes of the clever colour mixing they achieved to get their designs.
